Network of East Asian Think-Tanks (NEAT)

The Network of East Asian Think-tanks (NEAT) is a Track 2 international organization of ASEAN+3 countries. Its establishment was originally proposed in the reports of the "East Asia Vision Group" (EAVG) and the "East Asia Study Group" (EASG) made upon request of the ASEAN+3 Summit, and was approved at the ASEAN+3 Ministerial Meeting held in May 2003.

The 7th Annual Conference in Seoul, Korea (August 30 - September 1, 2009)

The Network of East Asian Think- tanks (NEAT) held its 7th Annual Conference (AC) and 11th Country Coordinators Meeting (CCM) in Seoul, Korea from August 30 to September 1, 2009. The host was the Korean Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (KISEAS) and 37 specialists and experts representing different think tanks in the ASEAN+3 nations participated.

The 6th Annual Conference in Bali, Indonesia (August 24-25, 2008)

The 6th Annual Conference (AC) and the 9th Country Coordinators Meeting (CCM) of NEAT were held in Bali, Indonesia from August 24-25, 2008, hosted by Center of East Asian Corporation Studies (CEACOS) of Indonesia University. Around 50 representatives and experts from the 11 ASEAN+3 nations participated.

The 4th Annual Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (August 22-23, 2006)

The 4th NEAT Annual Conference was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on August 21-23, 2006, under the sponsorship of the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia. About 70 think-tank representatives and intellectuals from ASEAN+3 (APT) countries participated in the Annual Conference. The 6 participants from Japan were: Prof. ITO Kenichi, President & CEO of the Japan Forum on International Relations (JFIR); Mr. ASAMI Tadahiro, Advisor of the Institute for International Monetary Affairs; Prof. SHIRAISHI Takashi, Vice-President of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies; Dr. YOSHITOMI Masaru, President & Chief Research Officer of the Research Institute of Economy, Trade & Industry; Amb. SUGIUCHI Naotoshi, Councilor of JFIR; and Ms. WATANABE Mayu, Executive Secretary of the Council on East Asian Community (CEAC). The Annual Conference adopted the Memorandum No.3 of Policy Recommendations, which will be submitted to the APT Summit through the APT Foreign Ministerial Meeting scheduled in December 2006. The 3rd Annual Conference in Tokyo, Japan (August 21-23, 2005)

The third Annual Conference of Network of East Asian Think-Tanks (NEAT)

The third Annual Conference of Network of East Asian Think-Tanks (NEAT) was held in Tokyo on August 21-23. The first Conference was held in Beijing in 2003, and the second in Bangkok last year. The Tokyo Conference was featured by the animated discussions with the participation of the representatives of think-tanks and scholars from 13 countries of ASEAN+3 (Japan, China, Korea) and other interested intellectuals totaling 96 persons.
    The Japan Forum on International Relations (JFIR), which is NEAT Country Coordinator (CC) of Japan, acted as host of the Conference. There were 37 participants from Japan with 26 being members and other related persons of the Council on East Asian Community (CEAC).
    In the final session, the Conference adopted by consensus the Policy Recommendations on the ideas and guiding principles of Community building in East Asia, which were submitted to the ASEAN+3 Summit in Kuala Lumpur in December, 2005 and a clear reference to the document was mentioned in the chairman's statement.(Paragraph 5) It was most significant at the third Conference this year that the reports of 6 Working Groups* were presented and contributed to the fruitful discussions. The next NEAT Annual Conference will be held in Malaysia.
